Chemotherapy and radiation treatments take a tremendous toll on the body’s Qi or energy systems. The digestive system is one of
the most vulnerable places. That’s why patients often experience nausea, appetite loss, and Qi deficiency. The second area
they destroy is the Kidney function, which then causes hair loss, bone aches, chills, diarrhea, joint pain and fatigue.
During chemotherapy and radiation treatments, eating for energy means choosing foods that support these vital organ systems.
While undergoing chemotherapy and radiation, traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) recommends eating mostly fresh fruit and
lightly cooked vegetables, especially: pears, almonds, kiwis, dandelion greens, and carrots.
Though these foods provide beneficial nutrients, their most important contribution to your healing process is their unique
ability to help detoxify the body and cool excess heat caused by these treatments. Besides addressing the side effects of
these two cancer treatments, there are healing recipes you can make to boost Qi and blood volume.
According to traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), foods that support the Stomach function are sugarcane juice, lotus seeds,
Chinese barley, Chinese dates, and others. Foods that support the Kidney function include clams, mussels, oysters, lobster,
quail eggs (fresh or canned). Remember: it is the essence of these healing foods that support specific organ systems.
During treatment, for breakfast, have two kiwis and a handful of toasted almonds. During the day eat at least four pears
(whole or juiced). Other meals should consist of one or more recommended vegetables and, if
possible, shellfish, which are particularly effective for reducing internal heat caused by chemotherapy and radiation.
